
Access and Affordability Medicines
Medicines play an important role in health systems throughout the globe, however one third of the world population does not have access to essential medicines. Generic drugs have been instrumental in reducing cost and improving affordability. With the increasing population and shrinking resources, generics could be a recipe for improving access and affordability of medicines in Pakistan. However, to gain a wider health professionals’ support, it is vital to understand the issues surrounding generic medicines. Ms. Shazia Jamshed is currently doing her PhD work by evaluating generic medicine use practices with respect to providers, prescribers and consumers.
Rational Drug Use & Dispensing Practises
According to WHO, more than 50% of the drugs are prescribed and dispensed irrationally. In Pakistan, where more than 80% of the healthcare is provided in the private sector, the role of dispensers/drug sellers is crucial in promoting rational drug use. This study by
Mr. Azhar Hussain will highlight the existing dispensing practices and will serve as a baseline for policy makers, managers, researchers and other stakeholders.
Role of Pharmacists in Public Health
Pharmacist role is vital in terms of drug distribution, quality use of medicines, in regulatory authorities and also in maintaining drugs quality. However, in Pakistan pharmacist’s role is neglected and his status in health policy is still a question mark. A peep into the health care system reveals a need to develop a vision for improving the role of pharmacist. A study is the need of the hour to investigate the issues related to the role of pharmacist and pharmacy practice in the country.
